We have a requirement to check whether the file exists or not in the SharePoint

We have a requirement to check whether the file exists or not in the SharePoint location ?.
Is there any way to achieve this without using SharePoint connector function and SFTP.
Reason for not using SharePoint Connector function is our client is still using portal pages so we will not be able to use Sail (SharePoint invoke function).Version used is 7.8
