I wanted to confirm that being a group admin does not have the same scaling concerns as group membership.
For example, in extreme circumstances (a user is a member of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of groups) process models and really anything that checks the user's security times out. If instead a user is a member of several groups but an admin of thousands would there be any similar concerns, or is group administration truly only relevant when an action is taken on that group (adding members, etc)?

Group membership only has scaling concerns due to how and when you check if what users are members of.
I don't think I have ever seen a process or SAIL code check to see if a user is an admin of a group. This is more for permissions on editing the group properties and/or members. So, you should be fine.
