For process backed records, and searching - how does this searching actually work? what are the limitations?
I can't seem to make head nor tail of why I can't get results to any of my searches - even though the values are in pvs and CDTs

@jarrods I assume that you are talking re the 'Search' functionality available in the left hand pane when a Record Type is clicked. If so, have you had a keen look at the documentation in the 'Notes' section at https://forum.appian.com/suite/help/7.11/Record_Design.html#Record_List? This should answer your queries to a maximum extent, if you are on and below 7.11.
If you are on Appian 16.1 and making use of Grid-Style_Record_List, then documentation at https://forum.appian.com/suite/help/16.1/Record_Type_Object.html#Grid-Style_Record_List should help you resolve your queries.
Added to the above, exploring the forum will help you overcome limitations by going for work around. Here goes a few examples:
1. For instance, we can't make a search on date field. But you can store the same as a value in a process variable (as your question is about Process Backed records) of type Text and then add the same in the tile. (A similar suggestion has been made at https://forum.appian.com/suite/tempo/entry/e-170377 with respect to Entity Backed Record.)
2. If you want to make the fields searchable and at the same time if you want to refrain from adding the same in tile, an unofficial hack has been in place as suggested by @philb at /search?q=OriginalPostID-164257.
