JSON Returned Text Usage

I am implementing the attached test case. Can any one through light on internal working of a!toJson() and a!fromJson() and its syntactical adjustments during it parsing in Appian as well

The second example can be made to work as follows:
with(
local!jsonString: fn!concat(
"{",
char(34),
"name",
char(34),
":",
char(34),
"xyz",
char(34),

"}"
),

a!fromjson(local!jsonString)
)
