We're collection social media handles of people in a record and are looking for a way to make calls to the social platforms to see how many followers the person/handle has. We'd like for this number to be refreshed on initial creation and every time the record is opened. Has anyone done this in their environment? Tips, tricks or documentation? Thank you

I think you can achieve this by using the API's provided by Twitter & Facebook which you can get from respective Developer Documentation (Twitter Developer Documentation).
There are always limitations to such API's provided as you can read it in documentation as well. You can play around with these API's and see if it works for you.
