There is a scenario where i have the UIs in an external application and i just want to use the workflow capability of Appian.I know from previous posts that this is not a recommended approach but still i need to find out a way to achieve the same due to client requirements.Does Appian API provides any menthods or interfaces to communicate with the workflow engine from an external UI application?I have seen in other BPM suites where some REST APIs are provided to communicate with the worflow engine and process data. For Ex-Getting the tasks list for a user, getting the process instance details etc.
1) Is it possible to implement or not?Yes or No
2) If yes then what would be the best approach?...

You have limited options available to you for exposing Appian's functionality outside of Appian. There is the Appian report SharePoint web part and the ability to publish Appian process models as web services. More information below:

Thanks Michael for the quick update. But this still does not resolve my problem. My use case is to replace all user input tasks with an external UI application without affecting the workflow feature.
