in the form of *.dev.orgname.com

For what purpose?
for calling out to an api on another system or for calling an api on the same appian server. If using https the cert needs to be installed. This is the context of the question. So if I add a cert for a wild card url like *.dev.orgname.com will appian allow the call?
I did a quick search for "wildcard" in the Appian documentation. It seems like the answer is no. But I do not know whether this holds true for all cases in which certificates are used.
In practice it seems it does not. Can you share where you saw it in the documentation?
We have an on prem install and it doesn't not give an error when uploading the cert but it doesn't allow the communication either.I think this might be the documentation you are referring to:
Self-Service Certificate Management - Appian 25.1
