Hi,
We are trying to send a file over a web service WSDL and we are using the convertdocumenttobase64() function to pass it.
The web service receiver successfully received everything, but the "Call Web Service" node failed with the following error:
Details: com.ctc.wstx.exc.WstxUnexpectedCharException: Unexpected character 'B' (code 66) in prolog; expected '<' at [row,col {unknown-source}]: [1,1] (APNX-1-4044-000)
Does anything know why is this happening? It seems like the base64 encoding is producing illegal characters in Appian?...

Based on the error message it may be that the response doesn't start with an xml element. You can view the response text in detail by turning on additional debugging in appian_log4j.properties:
log4j.logger.httpclient.wire=DEBUG
log4j.logger.org.apache.commons.httpclient=DEBUG
