Is it currently possible to have an external system call the Appian API to advance complete tasks in an Appian process instance?

Hello,

Is it currently possible (we're on 7.10 in the cloud) to have an external system call the Appian API to advance complete tasks in an Appian process instance? If so, what's the best way to accomplish this? We have a requirement that Appian be used as the workflow orchestration engine, but without the users actually using the Appian UI. Same requirement for a user viewing their assigned tasks (assigned to user groups of which they are a member) in an external system.
