Using an external file system to save files

Can we use "Call Web Service" smart service to communicate with an external WS to send and receive files/documents? Our end goal is to use an on premise external system to save and retrieve files from. Appian instance is on cloud.

It will depend on what services your on premise system exposes. We use SharePoint internally with Appian cloud using the SP wsdls. If you're able to with your infrastructure you could also consider SFTP.
