In the Edit Record list as per the requirement lastname,Firstname should be display in the grid but while sorting by last name it is throwing the error,
The alias [[field=STUDENT_L_NM, ascending=true]] cannot be used because it contains illegal characters. The alias must contain only letters, numbers, and underscores, and must start with a letter.

Try verify the sorting of your record list, it has to be one of the field on underlying CDT(assuming its entity backed record)? if you don't find any issues in a field, verify your data, sometime data issues may also cause sorting error! try with simple one row.
What Appian version are you using? if its latest you can only select fields from existing!
