  Swimlanes are used to override the assignment of nodes present in that lane. It help is visually dividing the flow, making your PM easier to understand by a consultant or even by an Analyst.

  I think that when using swim lanes, assignment of tasks should also be done by the swim lane. I see many cases in which a swim lane is only used for visuals.
