Is there a way to reassign a Task back to a Group after the Task has been accept

Is there a way to reassign a Task back to a Group after the Task has been accepted by a user and is inactive for x minutes? I tried the exception and the escalation on the User Task but this isn't working. Any ideas?

Escalation action on the task is designed exactly for this purpose. I would investigate further as to why that is not working.

Be sure not to use exceptions. An exception cancels the task and allows you to design an alternative process flow. Use escalations as Malcolm suggested.
