On a Tempo Task I am displaying the milestone of a process, but the milestone could have moved on since the task was created; so I believe in the task display I need to do a lookup to the Process CDT Variable where I store the current process milestone (request.Milestone) or do a lookup to the Process Backed Record for the current processId and pull back from CDT variable.

What is the best way to do this?

If you are persisting the CDT as the milestone progresses - write a rule to get the latest milestone status for that request.

Further to above point, I would write a query entity rule which would retrieve only that field as that's the fastest when it comes to performance.

There is no entity as it is a process backed record. Would the rule query the process using the process ID or query the record? Which approach and function would you recommend?

In that case, you can use queryProcessAnalytics or getportalreportdatasubset expressions to read process data.
