Cannot deactivate renamed user

I'm attempting to create a new user deactivation process which renames an account before deactivation. Our issue is that we keep getting new users added with old account names, which enables all previous user's information for the new user - which is a major security risk. We have 35,000 active accounts and 75,000 inactive accounts - so this happens frequently. However, when I run the Rename User node (appends "XXX" at the end), then deactivate, I get a "Does Not Exist - User" error - with this below in the logs. What is the issue here? Would we have to push some information to all analytics engines for this to work properly, etc?

When I access the re-named user in the User Record, I can see the updated username, but deactivate will not work on the account.
