Reports - selecting

How do I select records for a report where the selection is a date variable?
I want to select all records where datevariable is NULL or greater than 0 or ..

You could create a parallel column with the same pv but formatted as text and hide it. Your filter will be based on the text column instead; the filter you are trying to apply will be easy to be set up with this column; you can later save it as a rule in a filter set for your users to select it from the filter set dropdown.
