fileuploadfield not working as expected in 17.2

Question

We have migrated from 7.1 to 17.2 and the file upload field is not working as expected.it keeps throwing an error cannot index type text to field layout.I tried changing the code to fv!file.name and so on and then it is throwing an error 'invalid variable file found' . can someone help meif they have faced any such issues.TIA

Try to check up the how they implement file upload in 17.2 as 7.1 is way back the syntax and the properties might not match 
Also 
 'invalid variable file found' error comes because the fv!file property can only be accessed inside the validation parameter
