what is the alert equivalent in SAIL?

There is no component for showing a alert dialog on dropdown interaction in SAIL (not yet).
But - maybe you can show the alert on form submit.

When user tries submitting the form , just check the value in dropdown and show a confirmation box if required.
a!buttonWidget() supports showing confirmation dialog. docs.appian.com/.../Button_Component.html

You can do it on the button. If you can go to the button properties you can find Conformation Message,Label,Header etc.., This should be a good substitute for Alerts in SAIL.

I have mentioned the same. This alert however will come only when user tries to submit the form. It will not come when dropdown value is changed.

Yeah - that can be fine - if the user is ok with having to click on button everytime he/she changes the dropdown value.

I would also go with the confirmMessage on the buttonWidget().
That being said, if your requirement is to alert something field specific and you use instructions attribute to achieve that, you could also check helpTooltip attrib but these are designed for specific purposes.

If it were form specific, you could try some workarounds like having a dynamicLink, on click of the link, it should hide the parent interface and display another interface with a Close/Ok link which directs it back to the parent interface.
OR having a startProcessLink to start a process to pop another interface but it opens in a different tab because of its asynchronous behavior.

Thanks for the work around. its a drop down field specific so we used the instructions for the same.

You can even use boxlayout(display based on condition) with style configuration as "EEROR".
