Looks like the ri!addedToGroup field is null - hence the message. Is the group value being saved elsewhere ?
I was creating a process model. Just really following the steps provided here: https://docs.appian.com/suite/help/18.1/recipe_add_remove_move_group_members_browser.html
Its difficult to see what the issue is without the entire code sample. The Appian Recipe saves the Group that has been selected into an ri! field which the higher showWhen condition is then using to control section layout displays. I'd suggest copying the recipe as is to then see how you could adapt that recipe to your use case.
