The general approach in such scenarios, where a user has to navigate through a long list of data to get the the right record is to ask for a filter condition upfront and then display the paging grid that matches the search/filter criteria.

To answer your question though, don't think there is an out of the box option to change paging to be based on alphabets (or say months or other metric)- paging will be based on the total rows/records per page and pages will be represented as numbers
