How is everyone displaying formatted error messages on mobile enabled forms?

I would like to display a colored message on a form which currently requires either a message or paragraph element. The message element isn't supported on mobile forms and the paragraph element adds too much padding to the messages even when the length is set to short. Is anyone using a different technique for displaying error messages on mobile enabled forms?...

Thanks for the reply Shaun and Christine however using images in place of text causes three problems which together, in my opinion, outweigh the problems associated with using a poorly formatted paragraph element.
    1. Using an image automatically precludes any sort of dynamic error message.
    2. Significant additional developer time required for both project development and ongoing maintenance.
    3. Significnat bandwidth overhead on mobile devices for what is just colored text.
