How to change date format?

Hi,
When we use a date field, it has a default placeholder value as "M/d/yyyy", however we have a client requirement where we need to display the placeholder value as "mm/dd/yyyy". Is there any way through which we can achieve this?. Instructions will also not work here since we are using date field in editable grid.
We are into a shared environment and making the changes to server settings will not help here.

Like Jacob mentioned, that's the out-of-the-box format for the default language (English.) If other languages are enabled, each user will be able to change his/her language, which will in turn change the date format. Still, this is fully driven by the system based on user preferences and not be defined at the field level at design time.
