Details on What Triggers "OnSuccess" or "OnError" for a!startProcess()

I've been experimenting with the new smart service function a!startProcess(), which has the potential to be really powerful; it gives the option to do a lot, all from within a single user interface. However, the input parameters "onSuccess" and "onError" seem to act strangely in some cases. I had an issue with process model security, but tracking that down was difficult. I understand that the input parameters allow you to customize error (or success) messages with a!save(), but is there any way to get more information on why "OnSuccess" or "OnError" was triggered? For example, if there's an issue with process model security, how would I be able to access the underlying, system error message?
