What is the best way to get a group type given a group ID?

Use the OOTB "group" function to get the group type name for a given group ID. For example:
group(ri!groupId,"groupTypeName") will give you the group type name for an inputted groupId. Hope this helps!

ashvink is right. That OOTB functionailty should give you what your looking for.
