Appian Certification Maintenance

Certified practitioners are expected to continuously improve their knowledge and skills on Appian. This allows our practitioners to understand and implement the latest features according to best practices for scalability, performance, and user experience. To support this, each practitioner must complete the Appian Academy Online quarterly Release Showcase training, including the end of course assessment.

Appian Certified practitioners have 12 months from their original certification to complete required training. Completing each quarterly training moves the practitioner's expiration date 18 months from that course's release date. Note that completing a later training without completing earlier ones will not have an effect on expiration dates. If a practitioner does not complete all training, their certification status becomes inactive and at risk of expiring.

Training should be completed in chronological order, with the earliest incomplete release training done first. All courses after the original certification date must be completed for the expiration date to extend another 18 months. Courses are removed from Appian Academy Online 18 months from the date available. Please allow up to 48 hours from training completion for your record to be updated and dates extended.

Practitioners may bypass the required training if they take another Appian Certification exam at their current level or at the next level up before reaching their individual expiration date.

Understanding Certification Status

Appian reviews both individual and organizational metrics and uses certification status to do so. Below are the different statuses corresponding to our reporting requirements:

  • Active: Practitioners with Active certifications have successfully passed their Appian certification exam and satisfied any prerequisites. Active practitioners are current with their required release training. Active certifications count toward Appian Partner Program and Appian Customer certified staff numbers.

  • Inactive: Practitioners with an inactive status have gone 12 months without completing required training but are still certified. Inactive practitioners may become active again at their same certification level through completing required training. Inactive practitioners do not count toward Appian Partner Program or Appian Customer certified staff numbers.

  • Expired: A practitioner's certification expires when they have gone 18 months without completing required training. Once a certification becomes expired, that practitioner is no longer able to renew it. Expired certifications do not appear on a practitioner's Community profile, nor are they counted towards any Appian Partner Program or Appian Customer certified staff members. Regardless of level at the time of expiration, a practitioner must start over again with Appian Certification paths and take each exam sequentially.

* Please allow up to 2 business days for your Certification status to update and changes to appear.

Certification Maintenance Examples

To help illustrate how certification maintenance works, consider these scenarios:

  • No Action Taken: A practitioner earns certification on January 1st, 2023. If they take no further action to consume release training and stay current with the product, they will become inactive on January 1st, 2024 and no longer be counted towards their organization. On July 1st, 2024 their certification will expire.

  • Training completed in order: A practitioner earns certification on January 1st, 2023 and has an inactive date of January 1st, 2024. On March 1st, 2023, Appian releases quarterly training. The practitioner completes this training on April 15th, 2023. Upon completion, the practitioner's inactive date moves to March 1st, 2024 and their expiration date moves to September 1st, 2024. Inactive and expiration dates are tied to the date new training is published, not when the practitioner completes it.

  • Training completed out of order: A practitioner earns certification on January 1st, 2023 and has an inactive date of January 1st, 2024. Appian releases quarterly training on March 1st, 2023 and the practitioner does not complete it. Appian releases another quarterly training on July 1st, 2023. The practitioner completes the second training, but not the first. This practitioner's inactive date remains January 1st, 2024 until they complete the March 1st training. When they complete that, then they are up to date and all of their completing training is applied, moving their new inactive date out to July 1st, 2024.

  • New Certification: A practitioner earns Associate Developer certification on January 1st, 2023. They do not complete any additional training during the year. However, they successfully earn Senior Developer certification on November 1st, 2023. Their new inactive date is now November 1st, 2024.
