KB-2199 Application server fails to start Appian with "ORA-04031: unable to allocate X bytes of shared memory" error

Symptoms

The application server fails to start with the following error in <APPIAN_HOME>/logs/tomcat-stdOut.log:

ERROR org.hibernate.util.JDBCExceptionReporter - ORA-04031: unable to allocate X bytes of shared memory ("shared pool","unknown object","X","X")

Cause

The shared memory pool of the Oracle database is an insufficient size for the application server to start.

Action

Work with your Oracle database administrator to increase the size of the database shared memory pool.

This article applies to all versions of Appian using Oracle Database.
