KB-1052 "Unable to read file" error when opening exported Appian report in Excel


A report is exported using the export to Excel functionality. Upon opening the Excel report the following error is shown:

Unable to read file.

This issue is only seen when exporting the report from Internet Explorer. More information on the export to Excel functionality can be found in the Process Reports documentation.


There is a conflict in Internet Explorer that is preventing encrypted pages from being saved properly. More information is available in this Microsoft Support Article.


  1. On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Clear the checkbox for "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" in the Security section.
  4. Click OK (this is the default Internet Explorer setting).

Affected Versions

This article applies to all versions of Appian using Internet Explorer as a web browser.
