KB-1096 401 error thrown when executing an embedded action in Internet Explorer

Symptoms

When trying to execute an embedded action in an external web page in Internet Explorer, users may come across a 401 error.

Cause

Internet Explorer has a security setting called Access data sources across domains. When this setting is disabled, embedded actions will not be permitted to make calls across domains, which results in the 401 error being thrown by the browser.

Action

It is likely that your security settings are managed by an Internet Explorer administrator. If that is the case, please contact them to enable Access data sources across domains in Internet Explorer.

You can try setting this property for your individual browser session by performing the following steps:

  1. Hit the Alt key on your keyboard or select the gear icon in the top-right portion of the Internet Explorer window.
  2. Go to Tools > Internet Options.
  3. Go to the Security tab, and select the Custom level button.
  4. Under the Miscellaneous section, set the value of Access data sources across domains to Enable.
  5. Hit OK to save the updated settings.

Affected Versions

This article applies to all versions of Appian using Internet Explorer as a web browser.
