KB-1220 Portal report exported from Appian appears blank in Microsoft Excel


When a process report is exported from the /designer or /apps interfaces, it appears blank when opened in Microsoft Excel.


This behavior is caused by a configuration in Microsoft Excel that prevents it from trusting files that originate from the internet. For more information, see this Microsoft article here.


To resolve this issue, disable Protected View for files originating from the internet in Excel:

  1. Open Excel.
  2. Navigate to Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Protected View.
  3. Uncheck the Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet check box.
  4. Restart Excel.

Once Excel is configured correctly, the existing file can be opened. The report does not need to be re-exported.
