Can we install Appian Designer on our local system or on a cloud VM to explore server-level configurations and functionality?

The appian engines do have a local install, but it's difficult (at least it always was back when I did it occasionally), and requires a special license from Appian that isn't just available to anyone (it has particular opaque customer/licensing concerns, etc). With respect to practicing server-level configs in some other way, I'm not sure what I'd currently suggest. Perhaps email support@appian.com and see what it currently requires to authorize download of the local installer and receiving a license file.
In case you want to install Appian on-prem in your local environment and you are a partner, you just need to download the installer and request a license (it’s not a special one).
In previous versions, it’s true that the process was quite complicated, but in the latest ones, it’s much simpler and you can do it easily.

good to hear. i'm just a customer now and no longer with a partner org, so i assume this would be like pulling teeth (also i don't currently have a strong reason to need a local install, though god forbid i ever need to develop my own plug-in).
