Can appian's ear directory be run in tomcat? I know tomcat is a web application server but war files could be run with tomcat and so was curious to know if this will work? Just wanted to know if this is stupid or valid?

Agreeing with Abhi, Tomcat is not a full fledged app server compared to JBoss/Weblogic/WebSphere.
Tomcat is listed in the supported list of Application servers. If somehow you managed to make it work, you will have hard time maintaining it because of lack of support from Appian.
