If you've got thousands of groups, you will find that some functions might perform poorly - fn!getgroupbyname(), for example. Also, if you use groups for row-level record security you might see some performance issues there depending on your exact implementation.

@philb - When you say thousands of groups, approximately how many is that? Did you notice any performance issues adding and removing members from groups?

I have seen this issue from about 40,000 groups upwards - but the scale of the performance issues will depend on your infrastructure - obviously a more powerful server will be able to handle far more groups.

Hi garym there are no such limitations, but if we are operating with 1000's of groups and trying to do some operation over that, you can expect performance issues. However if you upgrade your server hardware /infrastructure configurations, performance issue might get resolve.

But in these cases, it's always better to maintain group details specific to one application in db, so that you can query and get the required group whenever you need.

There is no limit on number of groups you can have on Appian. We have over 300k groups on production. I say performance impact depends on your design more than infrastructure. As other practitioners mentioned you may notice degraded performance on certain expressions, some scenarios can be mitigated by saving the group info in DB etc.

There's nothing specific to Appian Cloud. If there was a limitation (which there isn't) it'd come from the base product docs.appian.com/.../Creating_Groups.html.
