From appian user's home directory, which you're dropped into when you sudo as appian user, cd ../.. to topmost directory.
Then from topmost directory, cd app/appian to get to <APPIAN_HOME>
The reason they say <APPIAN_HOME> is because you CAN literally put it anywhere, but if people didn't want to confuse themselves and just followed the installation instructions verbatim, that's where it is.
The full path to what you wanted is most likely cd ../.. then cd app/appian/deployment/web.war/WEB-INF/resources, then ls or dir and appian_log4j.properties is right there.

This isn't a URL description, as far as i know, it's a description of the filesystem directories on the machine running the Appian server. Are you working with a local / on-prem install?
on-prem install. So how do i map these paths to my on prem version
Assuming yours is a Linux server:
SSH into your server:
at command prompt type:
sudo -iu appian
enter your password if applicable
type:
cd ../..
then type:
cd app/appian
then you'll be at <APPIAN_HOME> (unless the person who installed it did something wacky)
cd deployment/web.war/WEB-INF/resources
dir
And you'll see the contents of the /resources directory, among them, the appian_log4j.properties file
view appian_log4j.properties
to see the file in the read-only version of VIM
vi appian_log4j.properties
to view and edit the file in the full version of VIM
to escape VIM type:
:q (colon followed by q)
Putting it simply, <APPIAN_HOME> simply refers to your Appian install directory. Honestly, it's up to you to know where that is.
