I think this depends on the corporate policies of an organization and will differ. There may be multiple ways to handle,
1. Add all the users in the organisation to Appian and give them access to just one default application which will enable them to raise a 'request for access' to other applications.
2. Use a third party request tracker system (which may already be present in large organization) from where user will send request for access.

You would need to create a JSP stateless servlet which can invoke a process model and pass all the details entered by an user to create user profile in Appian.
Here is the link for more details.

You can even leverage the functionality of Embed SAIL for your requirement.

For embedded SAIL interface, user should be logged into system as an Appian user. Please go through this details for embedded SAIL interface.
Authentication :
To load an Appian interface, even through a web component, the request must come from an authenticated user of the Appian system. To achieve a seamless user experience, both the web site and the Appian site should be secured using the same external authentication system. This system should be configured to pre-authenticate users to Appian. This means that once a user has logged in to the web site, they can access the Appian site--including the embedded interface--without presenting their credentials a second time. For more information, see Pre-Authenticated SSO.
If pre-authenticated SSO is not configured, users will have to present their credentials at the Appian login screen before they can access an embedded interface. If they have recently logged into the Appian site from the same browser, this might still appear seamless, but if they haven't, they will have to use the Appian login screen via the web component.

Hi Amit, We have created the stateless servlet. Can you please tell how to Invoke it.
NOTE: We developed the example which is given in the link below
forum.appian.com/.../Custom_Servlet_Plug-ins.html
While Invocation it is giving 404 error. The servlet (jar file) is placed inside the folder mentioned in the example.

Please refer to Java docs and ProcessStartConfig API to configure process input parameters and initiate a process.
