How does default email notification work on news feed for comments? I

How does default email notification work on news feed for comments?

I have observed that whenever there is any comment posted on the new feed for a particular process, the initiator and people to whom any task is assigned, they get an email notification from Appian stating the comment has been made by xyz person.

Can someone point me to documentation link which states the working of this functionality or share how it works?
