I think a good idea is to create an integration layer that talks to the mainframe on one side and represents business logic to Appian on the other side via webservices. This allows you to integrate data using records. A process in Appian might trigger some business logic on the mainframe also using WS.

Thanks for the ideas. We are starting down that road and have created a web service that BPM can call to request info from the mainframe application. I think that's probably what we'll end up pursuing for some of the other requirements.

That would be my recommendation as well as my research shows that there are no feature complete and dependable java based TN3270 (3270 telnet) libraries. The recommended scenario by many parties is to create a web services layer for interaction of modern systems with 3270 mainframe emulators running applications with the web service integration pulling data from the mainframe applications via screen scraping or other methodologies.

OK thanks. Hard to believe we're still in screen-scraping world but there's just not much we can do with mainframe-based 3270 applications.
