Excel Tools: export CDT to excel is writing to the template

First, I would note that the smart service you are using has actually been deprecated, and is no longer recommended for use (even though there is no way to actually reproduce its functionality with something else).

Second, if the Excel template has the same name as the "Document_name_to_create" (or the name is left blank) and is in the "Document_save_directory", then I believe the way the plug-in works, it will overwrite the template. Try specifying a document name that is different from the Excel template's name if it seems this scenario applies to you.

Hi gianninol, the Excel template name is different than the "Document_name_to_create" because I am dynamically creating the document name by adding the timestamp to it. So I don't think this is the issue.
