Send Email smart service is throwing "Failed to send email" error

Hi Everyone, 
 
 Send Email smart service is throwing "Failed to send email" error in the first instance. But when we restart node is working fine. can somebody tell me what the issue is here please.

First step would be to check tomcat-stdout.log and see if anything in particular is noted there in relation to the "first time" error.
