I get a random error with the update profile data smart service. It only happens on my processes where the user doesn't have a supervisor assigned. However it seems to be only partially consistent. There are some cases where the update works even though the user doesn't have a supervisor. If I just add the user itself as their supervisor if no supervisor exits I don't get any error anymore. Has anyone seen the behavior before and fixed it somehow?...

What is the error you are getting? Are different users running this node or is it always the same user who is invoking this process?

Appian is not showing me any error it just pauses in the error mode. It's always the process model creator who runs this node.

Can you check the application server logs? The error message might be there.

Look for the class UpdateProfileAdvanced or UpdateProfileAdvancedHelper in the logs
