Is it possible to pass a document object to a custom plugin? If yes, what will be the type of this object? How can the plugin code access the content of the document? By document I mean docx, pdf, jpg, etc.

Requirement is to integrate Appian with an API of a content management system. I would like to use the plugin to transfer documents in and out Appian from/to the content management system. I know I am little vague here. If you can point me to some generic info on document related API or documentation, that will be a start.
