We have a plug in that creates a document and then fills it with information the plug-in collects. Prior to 7.2 this worked fine, but now it appears that the document is created with a null content id and therefore throws an invalidContentId exception when we call ContentService.createVersion() against it. Has there been a deliberate change to the public API to cause this behavior?...

Check the release notes between the version you were previously on and 7.2 to be sure, but I don't recall a change to that API.

Nothing explicitly related but possibly the change "Content Engine Local IDs No Longer Reused" had unintended consequences? In any case changing from create() to createApproval() solved the problem (i.e. createApproval does return a valid content ID)
