KB-1732 Engine in FATAL state after applying Windows patch KB4338823

Symptoms

Engine(s) will transition to a FATAL state or will fail to start, throwing the following error in the corresponding engine db_*.log file found in <APPIAN_HOME>/logs/:

"FATAL .a.db "bind: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted."

Cause

Windows patch KB4338823 is known to cause network port issues. This patch applies to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.

Action

Revert to previous Windows patch or install Windows patch KB4345459.
