Error when resetting password of basic user using admin console

Hi all,

One of our basic users have forgotten his password. First, I've asked him to reset his password from the log-in page, but he reported that he's not getting an email (not even in his spam folder).

So I tried resetting his password using the admin console but I'm getting this system error.

Here's the error extracted from our logs:

Caused by: com.appiancorp.core.expr.exceptions.ExpressionRuntimeException$AppianExceptionWithRootCauseProvider: Expression evaluation error [evaluation ID = I9TTZ670]: An error occurred while attempting to store into the following variables: [local!passwordResetWriter]. Details: [[local!passwordResetWriter:The user [redacted@sample.com] does not have sufficient privileges to perform the requested action because they are not in any role.]] (APNX-1-4245-002)

We're currently using Appian version 18.4.

Has the user tried requesting a reset via Forgotton password link? Which Admin account are you using? Are you logged into designer OR have you got a process that runs with Admin privilege to reset the password?

Please check if the user is active before resetting the password.
If the user is inactive, please activate the user and add the user in any groups then reset the password.

Hi Sathya, thanks for the reply.

1. Yes, the user tried using reset via forgotten password. He's not getting the email. Including the spam folder. (There's also nothing wrong with his configured email address.)
2. I've used my own account, which have admin rights. I also ask one of my colleagues, but we're both getting the same error that I've posted above.
3. I did it manually in designer. Never tried using a process to do the reset.

Actually, I forgot to mention that the user was inactive/deactivated at first.
But but I did activated his account before initiating the reset, and that's where the error message that I've attached pops up.
And yes, he's part of several user groups.

Hi Clang, It seems that the user was part of many groups before his account was inactivated. After reactivating the account, the user must be added to any groups even though he was part of multiple groups before resetting the password.

As mentioned by chandhinir , please go ahead and add user to any one group he needs to be even if you see that the user is already in the group. We faced the same issue earlier and it is resolved by making the user active and then adding the user into a group. After this is done, you will be able to reset the password without error and I guess user will also be able to use forgot password functionality as well.
