An internal group is looking at using Appian for a document release approval workflow, but they'd only consider it if there way a way to include historically-approved documents as well so they could shut down their old solution completely.
*Completely serious question* Is there a good way to upload ~10,000 documents to Appian?...

This is doable. How exactly you implement it will depend on how you want to organize and annotate those documents, but for starters, there is a "Bulk Upload" button on the Documents Designer interface, which accepts a zipfile of files and folders.
Otherwise you are probably looking at some sort of automated process that loads documents in via the API. Depending on how the documents are currently accessible, you could make use of existing smart services like Receive File via SFTP or Collab/Filesystem Utilities.

We migrated over 100,000 documents for our first Appian implementation so don't let size put you off! The key task is determining a structure of Community - KC - Folder to load them in to so that they are still manageable once in Appian. We wrote a custom service to achieve this but it's certainly possible using existing components and process.

What are the storage considerations that we must consider when implementing a document storage solution of this capacity(100,000 documents). Guess it will be stored to disk, and we should allocate the size accordingly..

Disk space does of course need to be catered for but equally important is the distribution of files within Appian's content management system itself. If you put 10,000 files in a single Appian folder, or 10,000 folders in a KC then the UI will be under an unnecessary load when a user attempts to navigate around it. Therefore if you are migrating a huge batch or planning to upload a large volume of documents you need a logic system in place to create new Folders/KC/Communities on the fly in process. Try to stick to 1000 or fewer folders in a KC for example.

Thanks tim, we are evaluating and Filenet and Appian as a document management solution. Regarding the security of these documents stored in Appian, I guess the protection is at disk level, probably by encrypting it, right?
