We're currently in the process of converting a large (35,000+) user base from Portal to Tempo - one application at a time (30+). One thing we've been struggling with is the best way to promote News feed usage. We have some theories in the works, but one thing I would like to do is associate groups with system events so that they receive comment notifications - without having physically participated in the thread. For example, in one process any user may request something. When it is approved by a certain group, a news feed entry is added with viewers set to the requestor, their supervisor and the group member who approved. Users can view this post in their news feed, but if they comment there are no notifications sent out. Once we're converted fully we could potentially have hundreds of system posts per day that a single group approver or supervisor has viewer rights to. However, as far as I can tell there is no way to create notifications for users...

... or groups on a single post (for when a comment is added) until they have phsyically acted on it - is that correct? Our fear is that users will see 'approved' and 'denied' notifications in their news feed, then add comments and not realize no one is notified.

Just a thought in this without fully understanding the processes.

Wouldn't the news feed become to diluted with to many posts?

Could you just have one post that is generated every day and then takes the user to a record that has all "notifications" for that day via other records?

You could update the post periodically with how many records were added between the last update?

We could do something like that, but we're trying to keep it as simple as possible. Most of our 30,000 users will not have a diluted feed at all - they will only see maybe a few items per day. However some approvers work in systems where they approve many requests per day. For the end users, we want to post an item when their request is approved - and since they will undoubtedly comment on it, we would want to include the approver on the news feed entry. The approver's feed could be diluted, which is the primary focus of the post - to ensure the approver gets notified when the end user comments on the post they are both associated with. Otherwise, approvers who have a diluted feed may miss comments or questions by end users.

An example would be similar to the Appian Credential Program feed posts, as far as what would be an enhancement to achieve what I am looking for. Currently, when a Credential is given and the news feed entry is posted for the user, that user is not tagged in the post. So, when peers comment with congratulations and what not, the user is not notified of comments to the post unless they happen to see it. In relation to our environment, we would want something similar to automatically tagging the user in that post so they are notified of comments via email, without having physically been involved in the post.

Users can also "star" the post to receive notifications whenever anyone comments on it. Please see the notifications documentation for more details: forum.appian.com/.../Notifications.html

Thanks, the documentation is helpful. However since we cannot expect the approvers to star each post manually after they approve a process, my requirement may not be achievable currently.

One option could be to post the event to the feed as the approver (rather than as a system event). Then the approver should be able to receive notifications if there are any comments on the post (even if they haven't participated in it or starred it) via the "New comment on your post" feed notification.

Thanks Tom, we have been going that route for a few cases - but most may have 3-4 approvers and there is no way to determine which one the requestor may have a question or comment for, and we would also like to use the icon associated with the application record in the post as well (only possible with the system event). Appreciate the suggestions though.

No worries! Another alternative (though perhaps less preferred) might be to use a record tag on the news post to drive users to a record with a related action, and ask any questions there.
