When a group of users is assigned a task and one of the users selects the task the other users receive an error “An error was encountered while processing your request. Please try again.” When trying to accept the task. Is that a known issue or do we have some configuration set up incorrectly to catch these errors?...

This is expected behavior - users "collide" for the same task and while the first person grabs the task, it blocks other users from being able to open it. Agreed that the "error" text is not helpful at all - please open a support case.

Actually Appian shows a pink pop-up with a more informative message (see attached screenshot) if you're seeing a generic browser pop-up with the message "An error was encountered while processing your request. Please try again." then there's a configuration change you need to do at the IIS level (assuming that is the web server you're using)
To fix this:
1. Click on your IIS Site -> Error Pages -> Edit Feature Settings -> Select "Detailed Errors" only
2. Disable the custom error pages IIS Site -> .NET Error Pages -> Edit Feature Settings -> Off
The technical details on why this is needed have been shared with your team in the support case.

Thanks Eduardo, we made the changes and there is no longer an error message, but the message that comes up isn't the most helpful. Can the message be modified? I have attached a screenshot of the message we receive now.

The message you're seeing indicates the user had an open task and is trying to submit that task but another user already submitted it. This message is not configurable but it shows the root cause, it lets the user know that the task has been already submitted.
What wording would you suggest that would be more meaningful for this scenario?

Eduardo, I understand the use of the message against 400 and 404 errors and a system wide use. But our users would like to see a more meaningful message. Something similar to: "<User Name> has accepted this task, <TaskName>, at <Date Time>."
