KB-2424 Legacy Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) application deprecated in Appian 23.2

Symptoms

The deprecated Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) application is present in the environment and references plug-ins with Deprecated APIs (e.g. Zip File Utilities plug-in on v2.0-v2.0.x).

Cause

The Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) application was deprecated in Appian 23.2. IDP relied on smart services that have since been deprecated and is no longer the recommended approach for document processing.

Action

Per Appian Documentation, to classify documents or extract document, use Appian AI skills. If you have an existing IDP application in your environment, it will continue to function, but will not be updated.

If removing the IDP application is desired:

  1. Search for all references and precedents to objects within the IDP application via Dependents in Appian Designer to confirm no active process models, interfaces, or integrations depend on it.
  2. Remove the IDP application first in a non-production environment and validate there is no unexpected impact before proceeding in Production.
  3. Update any plug-in to its latest version to resolve deprecated API usage, particularly if it is used elsewhere in the environment.

Note: If current workflows have migrated to the modern AI Skills-based document extraction/classification (via Extract Document / Classify Document smart services), removing the legacy IDP application should not impact that functionality.

Affected Versions

This section applies to all versions of Appian.
