Appian Environments

Hi, I am a new Appian employee and I just wanted to understand how many environments do we usually have in Appian where to deploy our applications? What are their most important features? Are there some best practices to follow in using them?

I know there are the development one and quality (or testing) one for building and testing the applications and the production one where the applications run, but is there a link to a more specific documentation of the differences between them? I couldn't find it.

The minimum recommended is 3: 

  • Development
  • Testing
  • Production

Additional environments may be needed depending on your organization's operational requirements. Non of this is specific to Appian, it's common practice across IT Change & Run wherever you go and whatever tool(s) you use.

    There isn't a single fixed number of environments that every Appian implementation must have. The environment strategy generally depends on the organization's SDLC, release process, security requirements, and whether you use Appian Cloud or self-managed Appian.

    A common setup is:  Development → Test/QA → Production

    Depending on the organization, you may also see additional environments such as

    Development → QA → UAT/Staging → Production
