performance

Is there any other way to check the performance of an interface other than the performance tab? I often see interfaces that say they take 100 ms to load (or whatever number) and yet spend 20-30 seconds opening the page. There seems to be some kind of disconnect there and I am trying to figure out where the issue stems.
