Portal Record Refresh Delay After Process Initiation

We are currently experiencing a delay between process initiation and the visibility of updated record data in the Portal. Is there a recommended approach to refresh or synchronize record data more quickly so that users can see the latest updates immediately after submitting an action or starting a process? This would help provide a more seamless and responsive user experience.

Since this is an Appian Portal, I would recommend reviewing the process execution mode and interface refresh behavior.

Use a!startProcess() with isSynchronous: true: This allows the Portal to wait for the process to complete before executing onSuccess. With asynchronous execution, onSuccess can execute before the record updates are completed. Refresh the data in onSuccess: Update a local refresh counter in onSuccess and use a!refreshVariable() with refreshOnVarChange to re-query the record data once the process completes. You can also access process variables through fv!processInfo.pv.variableName within onSuccess and save the returned values into local variables. This avoids an additional query if the process already provides the required updated data.

Synchronous execution has a 30-second limit. If the process takes longer, onIncomplete is triggered. For such cases, consider asynchronous execution with periodic interface refresh or a processing-status indicator.

Sample code refresh data on on success:

local!refreshCounter: 0,
  local!recordData: a!refreshVariable(
    value: rule!GET_PORTAL_DATA(),
    refreshOnVarChange: local!refreshCounter
  ),
  {
    a!buttonWidget(
      label: "Submit",
      saveInto: a!startProcess(
        processModel: cons!SUBMIT_PROCESS,
        isSynchronous: true,
        onSuccess: {
          a!save(
            local!refreshCounter,
            local!refreshCounter + 1
          )
        }
      )
    )
  }
)
